Dance to Your Own Beat!

D.J. Vanasby D.J. Vanas

I will never forget Mr. Stephens. He was my elementary school music teacher and was as exotic as they come. He had salt-and-pepper hair, a walrus mustache and wore fashion frame glasses, Hawaiian shirts and even sported a tail (way before they became a hair trend). In his class, we didn’t just learn the standards. We learned a variety from latin-inspired “Guantanamera”, to gospel “Down by the Riverside” to the pop songs we liked as kids. We sang Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” and “Babe” by Styxin fold up metal chairs in the trailer that served as a classroom. It sounds cheesy looking back, but I’ll never forget how good that felt and how fun it was. He let us be us. In fact, he did more– he encouraged us to be us! Read more »

Money, Money, Money

D.J. Vanasby D.J. Vanas

I often hear people say that money is the root of all evil.  However, this oft-misquoted biblical text actually says it’s the “love of money” that can be our undoing.  Few subjects are as emotionally charged as the concept of money – earning it, spending it, investing it, losing it, dreaming about it, wanting it… needing it.

We live in a society that is oftentimes contradictory, and at other times absurd, in the way we view money. If we pay a person $25 million a year to play a game, we don’t bat an eye.  But if a teacher gets more than $50k a year, they are accused of being in it for the money.  We love it, we hate others with it, we get inspired by it, we dream about it, fear for a lack of it, and yet have problems we could have never imagined when we suddenly get lots of it (study the Lottery effect and how many families are torn apart through feuding and fighting once a family member wins the lottery). Knock It Out of the Park!

Avish Parasharby Avish Parashar

I don’t much like baseball, but I really like baseball metaphors. So today, I am going to encourage you to do your best to “knock it out of the park.

This idea came to me while watching “Comedian,” a documentary that follows Jerry Seinfeld after the end of his show, “Seinfeld,” as he starts his stand-up act over completely from scratch. It’s a very cool movie, and if you have any interest in stand-up comedy (as a performer or observer), I would highly recommend it.

Towards the end of the movie, Seinfeld meets Bill Cosby (which is pretty cool, since Cosby is one of Jerry’s idols), and Cosby points out to Jerry that he has already accomplished something great.

Then Cosby says: Read more »
