Blended Learning Solutions

Blended learning uses a combination of delivery methods, including the use of today’s technologies, in an effective and interactive training program. It often mixes traditional instructor-led classroom training with other synchronous and asynchronous technology-based training deliveries or modalities.

The delivery of blended learning programs often includes, but is not limited to:

  • Face-to-face, instructor-led classroom training
  • Participation through teleconferencing
  • Online presentations -- internet- or intranet-based
  • Text articles
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Exercises and case studies
  • Chats -- for group or class discussions (synchronous)
  • Discussion boards -- for group or class discussion (asynchronous)
  • E-mail -- for group or class discussion (asynchronous)
  • White boards -- for focused discussions and authoring

Blended learning that integrates e-learning with traditional classroom learning can be highly effective for people who work at various locations, as well as for those with time constraints. Technology allows participants to access training modules anytime and from anywhere. The use of the computer for training is simply another avenue to reach participants who are separated by distance, and is an excellent medium for following up after classroom training.

Blended Learning Example

In assessing training needs, a survey can be delivered via e-mail or teleconferencing. After the needs are determined, the training program might begin with a face-to-face classroom session for a specified time frame (often one or two days). The classroom session is followed up with further discussion and feedback using other technologies, such as teleconferencing and the Internet. These interactive sessions encourage the use of the skills learned and keep the participants focused on incorporating those skills into their daily operations, yet do not require additional time in the classroom.

For example, managers may come together for a classroom training session on team building and then follow up with discussions online and e-mails to each other and to the trainer to further incorporate and instill the skills and concepts previously presented. The instructor could describe a scenario pertinent to the participants/organization and assign the entire class or small groups to analyze the situation and discuss how they would use the learned skills to manage the situation. Participants would also be able to discuss their own specific situations and share options for addressing them with others.

Follow-up sessions could use various technologies. Participants could:

  • Use e-mail for discussions that would include the trainer/facilitator and for summarizing discussions
  • Use discussion boards for various topics where the facilitator would post the main topic and encourage participants to post their own concerns
  • View a PowerPoint presentation on the internet; participants could join in a chat or a teleconference to discuss concepts and application of skills
