Performance Management
by Herb Dreo
A performance evaluation (PE) program tends to be highly customized. Here are some of the factors involved:
- Does the organization have a PE process in place – including forms, procedures, etc. – or must a system be developed? In this case, there will be some work to be done before a training program is conducted.
- If a PE process exists, is it seen as adequate or must it be modified?
- To what degree are management and HR happy with the current quality of the reviews that supervisors/managers conduct?
These factors strongly influence the nature of the program. Regardless of whether pre-program consulting and development is needed, this program will involve pre-work consisting of sampling an anonymous exampling of existing documentation, goal statements, and performance evaluations. This information will be used to gauge the current quality of these important Performance Evaluation components and can be used as examples of what is adequate and what needs improvement.
